I actually doubt that as well. in "conversations with the dead" jerry is actually pretty critical of chick corea and that whole scene...

heres the portion I was referring to (interview w/ Blair Jackson and David Gans, 4-28-1981):

"Gans: Have you seen Group 87? Mark Isham, Peter Maunu, former Van Morrison guys. Like Weather Report, but they had a guitar instead of [saxophonist] Wayne Shorter. Like a young Weather Report...

Garcia: There are some real great those-kind-of-musicians. Thats kind of like music-school music, state-of-the-art music-school music. Weather Report and the whole Chick Corea school of keyboard-an awful lot of it is like musicians' music. It's not really fun to listen to.

Gans: The feeling I get is that they are all playing on the same stage at the same time, but they aren't playing together. I'm used to the Grateful Dead, where there's incredible personal dynamics happening. With those guys, it was improvisations, but it was each guy on his own turf.

Garcia: I don't know why those guys, with their ability, don't have a concept that is sort of like ensemble improvisation. They're certainly capable of doing it but they don't, for some reason..."
